Ventolin is a brand-name bronchodilator that contains the active ingredient albuterol, which belongs to the family of medications. It is used to treat: chest, heartburn, and bronchospasm (inflammation of the bronchial tubes). Ventolin works by relaxing the muscles in the airways of the lungs, thereby providing relief from symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition in the airways that causes difficulty in breathing, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Ventolin is the only drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of asthma in the 1990s and has become a popular choice among asthma patients. In 2012, Ventolin sales reached $2.9 billion for the United States, with a market share of 46% for Ventolin. In clinical trials, Ventolin consistently produced better asthma control than other bronchodilators, with 90% of patients experiencing improvement compared to less than 15% in patients taking an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).1
Ventolin is prescribed to treat asthma and other respiratory conditions caused by the active ingredient in albuterol. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways of the lungs, thereby providing relief from symptoms of asthma and COPD. Ventolin belongs to a class of medications known as bronchodilators and is used to treat conditions such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and shortness of breath associated with bronchospasm (inflammation of the bronchial tubes).2
Ventolin comes in two forms: a liquid form and an aerosol form. The liquid form of Ventolin is available in the form of a liquid by inhalation. The aerosol form of Ventolin is available in the form of a aerosol by inhalation. Ventolin is most commonly used as a bronchodilator, which helps to relax the muscles in the airways and allows the airways to open more easily. Ventolin can be prescribed to patients who have difficulty breathing due to asthma or who have a history of breathing problems such as a chronic cough or wheezing, or who have had a recent history of bronchospasm or a recent history of bronchial asthma. Patients who have a high-dose prescription for Ventolin should be given 2 inhalations every 8 hours, as needed, for 10-14 days. Patients who have a history of bronchial asthma should be given 200 mcg twice daily (bronchodilator) or as directed by their doctor.2
Patients who are prescribed Ventolin should be given the lowest dose of Ventolin available, such as 2 inhalations every 8 hours, as needed, for 10-14 days, with symptoms of worsening asthma and COPD being reported in the early to mid- TW days. The lowest dose of Ventolin available should be used for the shortest duration necessary to control symptoms, and is usually taken once daily. Patients should take the medication as directed by their doctor, and the dose should be adjusted based on the patient's response and tolerability. If the patient experiences difficulty breathing or is requiring a second inhalation, they should seek medical attention immediately.2
Ventolin is only available with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. The generic version of Ventolin, salbutamol, is also available for clinical use. Salbutamol inhalers are available by prescription only and are prescribed for patients who are unable to take Ventolin inhalers due to asthma or COPD.2 The generic version of Ventolin is albuterol sulfate, which is available in the form of a cap or solution. 2Salbutamol can be prescribed to patients who cannot swallow pills, and can be taken by mouth or applied directly to the affected area. 2Salbutamol inhalers can be used by patients who are unable to take Ventolin inhalers due to asthma or COPD.2
Ventolin is a prescription medication and should only be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. The following drug interactions may occur with Ventolin:
• Allergic reaction: Ventolin can cause an allergic reaction when inhaled corticosteroid medications are administered together. The allergic reaction can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and rash. In some cases, Ventolin may cause an allergic reaction.
